Mom & Baby Checklist

Things to do during pregnancy

  • Take a folic acid supplement - ideally just before you plan to conceive.
  • Follow a healthy diet.
  • Cut caffeine down, quit smoking and avoid alcohol altogether.
  • Know the date of your last period and take this information along to your 1st appointment to see your midwife who will arrange your natal care for the next 9 months.
  • Check out your local maternity hospital.
  • Get fitted for a maternity support bra from around  the 6th or 8th week of your pregnancy.
  • Avoid foods that could contain bacteria, parasites, or toxins – including undercooked meat, unpasteurized soft cheeses, anything that contains raw eggs, sushi made with raw fish, raw oysters and other shellfish, fish that's high in mercury, and raw sprouts.
  • Start doing Kegel exercises. Kegels can help prevent urine leaks during and after pregnancy, keep hemorrhoids at bay, and improve the muscle tone of your vagina.
  • Once you reach mid-pregnancy, Start sleeping on your side, especially on your left side, which may improve blood flow to your placenta and reduce swelling. To make side-sleeping more comfortable, you may want to place a pillow between your legs, under your hip, or behind your back.
  • Pack your hospital bag - have it ready for around week 34
  • Choose a birth plan and have it ready for weeek 34.
